male and female pileated

In Jan 2018 a pair of pileated woodpeckers drilled multiple holes in a dead tree in my Ledyard yard. They were difficult to photograph as their hammering heads were never still. 1 and 2-inch woodchips flew everywhere.

pileated holes

The holes the pileateds made were the classic rectangular shape of the species. We could see them visiting their work regularly in the days following, they'd stick their heads inside and were eating whatever bugs they had revealed.

displaying male wild turkey

April 2018. It's spring and turkey love is in the air. This displaying wild turkey male paraded earnestly about our yard one morning. The female he was following seemed unimpressed.
